On Saturday 24 May 2025, UPF New Zealand held its annual commemoration of the United Nations International Day of Families at the Kelston Community Centre, Te Pae o Kura, Hikurangi in West Auckland. Around 60 people attended the event, which carried the theme "Family-oriented Policies for Sustainable Development."

Opening Programme

The event was opened with prayer by Apostle Shannon Leilua of the Ratana Church, grounding the gathering in the spiritual foundation that connects UPF New Zealand's diverse community.

Geoffrey Fyers, Secretary General of UPF New Zealand, delivered the UPF statement on the significance of the day and the organisation's commitment to family strengthening across Aotearoa.

Presentations

The programme featured presentations from a number of community leaders:

  • Mrs. Anne Degia-Pala, QSM — a distinguished community leader recognised for her service to New Zealand
  • Mr. Kenji Watanabe — Chairman of UPF New Zealand, speaking on the role of families in building peaceful communities

Cultural Performances

The event was enriched by cultural performances from members of the community:

  • IKPACT members Suresh Trivedi and Shashi — offering a warm cultural contribution from the Indian Kiwi community
  • FFWPU Youth choral presentation — a moving musical performance from young members of the Faith Federation

Family-centred Policy in Focus

The UN International Day of Families, observed each year on 15 May, highlights the importance of family as the foundation of peaceful, sustainable societies. This year's theme — family-oriented policies for sustainable development — resonated strongly with UPF New Zealand's ongoing National Family Day Petition campaign, which calls for recognition of 11 November as a dedicated national family day in Aotearoa.

We are grateful to everyone who joined us at Kelston Community Centre and to all our community partners who continue to support this important work.
